Employee Interview
New Chitose Airport Office, International Cargo Department, International Cargo Section
Please tell us about your work
All international air cargo from Hokkaido is collected in the bonded area of New Chitose Airport. The International Cargo Division is responsible for on-site management of import and export cargo there. As the transportation manager, I am responsible for checking the air waybill (AWB), which is the cargo's passport, entering cargo data into each airline's system, and declaring import and export cargo to customs.
How did you end up joining HAP?
Since I was a child, I often used airports on family trips, and I wanted to work in an airport-related field in the future. When I was in high school, I learned about HAP, and as I researched it, my interest grew and grew. After visiting the workplace, I decided that I wanted to work there. I was convinced that this company would become an indispensable part of Hokkaido in the future.

Did you have any knowledge about international cargo?
When I was told I would be assigned to this department, a question mark popped into my head. I really started with zero knowledge, so every day was a learning experience, but I'm the type of person who likes to try new things, so I was excited to get to work. I think I've been able to grow steadily thanks to the generous support of my seniors.
What are the challenges of handling cargo instead of passengers?
Passengers have the highest priority on an aircraft, followed by baggage, and then cargo. We must absolutely avoid situations where cargo delays disrupt operations. We always strive to be on time, but sometimes unexpected problems arise. When this happens, we work hard to resolve the situation within the limited time remaining until the scheduled flight.

What are your dreams and goals for the future?
This is a department I never imagined I'd be working in before joining the company, but I've grown fond of the work I do, which is the only department in Hokkaido that handles international air cargo. I'm also proud that we're supporting Hokkaido's economy by quickly sending seafood, a major export item, overseas. My dream is to continue gaining experience in the International Cargo Section and become a specialist.
What message would you like to give to those who want to become HAP?
I think HAP is suited to people who are positive and have a spirit of challenge. I joined the company with no prior knowledge of aviation, so personally I would like to work with people in the same situation. Even if you don't know much about the aviation industry, it's okay because our seniors will teach you from the ground up. You have a lot of potential, and I would like to expand the possibilities of HAP together with you.
